Digital education has grown dramatically since early 2000’s. Education is now a global competitive market supported by the democratized access to information and digital technology innovations. However, in this new education context of blended and online experiences, there are still major challenges to be tackled down. How do we guarantee universal access to education regardless of borders and physical limitations? How do we also guarantee that the person behind a computer and behind an academic work is who he/she says it is?
These are the two core questions that TeSLA Projects aims to address. TeSLA aims to combine the latest safe assessment validation technologies into a holistic platform that can interoperate with other existing education technologies, in order to provide a secure mechanism for digital assessments. The technology incorporates a number of so called “instruments” like face recognition, voice recognition, keystroke recognition and plagiarism control among others, into an easy to integrate and use platform. Organizations using TeSLA will be able for the first time to have close to 100% proof of the work happening online, outside the limits of their classrooms and campuses.
TeSLA project puts education quality at the center of the solution. Part of the 18 members of the consortium are quality agencies in the Higher Education space. The project is backed by the European Union and its Horizon2020 framework, as an innovation project. During the pilot we will be reaching more than 10,000 assessment takers in a variety of countries in Europe. The conclusions will help deliver to distance and traditional higher education organizations a simple, yet highly configurable and quality proven safe assessment framework.
TeSLA´s goals are very ambitious. Having traditional higher education organizations forget about the boundaries of physical assessments and test taking is no small task. How transparently this type of technology will interoperate with already existing infrastructure and systems will be paramount for adoption. Both users, faculty and administrators will need to understand the new context where technology can and will provide a continuos assessment of the identity and proof of work while online. All this said, the growth of online and blended programs expected until 2020 are a great reflection that the market is in need and will continue to be even in more need in the next years for this type of assurance and accreditation while working online and with digital education services.
