The 2nd Pilot is considerably larger that the first pilot, involving some 3,500 students in 77 courses in seven universities, and whereas the 1st Pilot was intended merely to test the project communication protocols and some early prototypes of a few of the TeSLA instruments, in the 2nd Pilot we are testing a functioning TeSLA system involving most of the TeSLA instruments.

The first task in each university running the pilots was to get the TeSLA system up and running in their university learning environments. Each institution has its own story of how this implementation went. In Sofia, the implementation was carried by two university partners – the Technical University of Sofia and Sofia University – with the two universities working closely together on the process.

Orlin Marinov – the TeSLA Technical Lead at the Technical University of Sofia – describes the process at TUS:

orlinInstallation and configuration of the TeSLA tools has been difficult and resource-intensive, demanding full mobilization of our available resources. The need to adhere to tight deadlines pushed us to make the most of our existing capacity.

Implementation was facilitated by the fact that the TeSLA tools, as created by the TeSLA technical team were well-made, meeting the requirement conditions of platform independence. Nevertheless, in order to get things up and running effectively, we needed to work closely with colleagues from Sofia University and the Open University of Catalonia.

The software necessary for the basic TeSLA tools operation has now been installed. This includes cloud infrastructure, constructed from over 30 virtualized resources, integrated through a virtualized collaborative network connection. It was also necessary to configure the name servers and integrate the plug-ins for Moodle and other software necessary for their operation. A number of minor errors in the installation process were detected, reported and corrected, leading to the initial approval of the TeSLA instruments.

After the successful launch of the TeSLA system, it was connected with the existing information system of Technical University of Sofia (TU Private Learning Management System and Moodle VLM). This was followed by the integration of the newly installed system in existing and ongoing university processes for software testing, according to the standard ISO / IEC / IEEE 29119, and in particular ISO / IEC / IEEE 29119-2.

All this would not have been possible without the wonderful cooperation of colleagues on the project, which gives me reason to believe that TeSLA project is a good example of local and cross-border cooperation in the spirit of the European values.

Mihail Peltecov – the TeSLA Technical Lead at Sofia University describes the process at SU:

mihailThe main steps of the TeSLA process integration at Sofia University were:

-Installation of a server with operating system Linux (CentOS 7).

-Configuration of the application (Docker) by means of which all necessary services for the operation of TeSLA will be installed.

-Using the scripts provided by the project partners for installation of all necessary services that will be used for the project.

-Configuration of TeSLA services.

-Install of the necessary module for Moodle, which supports the integration of TeSLA services in Moodle.

Each of the other universities involved in the 2nd pilots (Open University in the UK, the Fundació per a la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Spain, the Open Universiteit in the Netherlands, Anadolu University in Turkey, and Jyvaskylan Yliopisto in Finland) will have its own story of the implementation process, and each met their own problems related to integrating TeSLA into their local learning environments. However, the systems are now successfully installed in each university and the initial bugs sorted and partners have begun to use the TeSLA system in their assessment activities as part of the 2nd Pilot.
