The 17th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training was held in Olhao, peaceful and beautiful town, located in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Park of Algarve, one of Portugal’s 7 natural wonders.
The conference venue and the ambitious organization of the plenary and regular sessions provided for an efficient and fruitful working atmosphere. In a time of the unprecedented access to knowledge through IT, the conference objective concerned the revisit of the fundamental purpose of the educational system: not the knowledge itself, but what makes capable “can do” graduates for modern society. The challenge of education in the technology fields is how students can articulate what they “know” into what they can “can do”. Co-located with the conference was IEETel – the 9th International Workshop on Interactive Environments and Emerging Technologies for E-learning. This event was dedicated to share and discuss new solutions, trends and realizations of eLearning environments and the adoption of emerging technologies in educational settings. Among the topics announced were: Security and privacy, Learning Analytics, Educational Data Mining, Social-Collaborative Learning, Peer Learning and Peer evaluation, Assessment in education. Within a selection of talks on Machine Learning and Learning Analytics for Integrating Data with Learning, Student’s Assessment of Reflections on the Prediction of Learning Performance and Ontology-based learning style prediction, an author team from the Technical University of Sofia (TUS), partner in the Tesla project, contributed to the topic Assessment in education with research results on e-assessment supported by e-authentication and authorship verification in two aspects: The one considered problems of quality assurance applicable to e-assessment. It is a result of joint work with partners from AQU – the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency. On the basis of a methodology for external quality evaluation of e-assessment, developed within the Tesla project and complying with the European Standards and Guidelines, the research of the TUS team presents a use case for an internal evaluation framework of the quality of e-assessment, which reflects the need of TUS as engineering higher education institution with blended learning environment, for adapting the requirements for quality assurance to the e-assessment process.
